Hmm. Fairly important. Especially when creating “fantasy” names or using names from a language English readers may not be familiar with, it’s important your characters all have very distinctive spellings and pronunciations. Plus, for the sake of tone, it’s usually best your cloaked overlord doesn’t go by Silly Sally while the everyman protagonist answers to Infidelity of the Masses Jr.

I’d say the characters in a book need a name you will remember, I quite like to give nicknames to mine as I think they become more memorable.
