“This is now. We are here to move forward.” Sierra said as she looked back Tenast.
He moved closer to her, “You will be the point of light that leads us all. A pillar to support and carry.”
“No, we’re all the light, the pillars, and the strength. No one is greater than another. That will be our greatest power.” She said and placed her hand on his shoulder.
Tenast looked at her one last time before he said to the crowd, “Today we fight! Tomorrow we live!”
Now, given the brief dialogue example above, how would I go about coming up with a description of Sierra. The dialogue suggests someone with wisdom and humility. So, I would think of similar characters I’ve come across in books and movies. I would then tweak those characteristics into something that is unique. I would hint at tones of skin, hair, and eye color. Never fully describing them so as to leave the complete picture up to the reader’s imagination. Thus, drawing them into the story further.
How would you go about describing Sierra? Do you have a checklist for character creation? Or, do you ‘pants’ it by going with your gut? When you find the characteristics you like, do you ever go back and make changes after continuing to write? How much are your character descriptions based on outside influences? And, one last question before I let you go. How much does your character’s appearance influence their personality and vice-versa? I can’t wait to hear your answers.
