Hour After Hour

HOUR AFTER HOUR

Lonesome barflies and ragged Romeos

Dwellers steeped in nostalgia

Shame from my mind ever flows

No Jesus—no Mohammed—no euthanasia

Giving up is come and go

Street lights—indication of the way

I put this smile on for show

For sorrow tends to fill my day

The roots have dug deep

I gently—deliberately bend in the wind

With no dreams to assuage my sleep

Into oblivion—no journey and no end

Hours of daylight tirelessly mock

Keeping me isolated with judge—jury—and executioner

I fear they listen—I know they gawk

Negotiating what’s left—not for more but for fewer

Blackness returns in pursuit of hour after hour

I no longer scurry—I no refuse to contest

Their judgment rings out louder and louder

I stagger around this unrelenting mess

Lonesome barflies and ragged Romeos

Dwellers steeped in sorrow

All this time—who knows where it goes

Till night arises anew and we forget our tomorrows
